I am about to delve into Pity the Nation, an account of the Lebanon civil war by former Times journalist, Robert Fisk. Lebanon was, of course, a staging ground for a tragic tug-of-war between nations, and just paging through the preface had me thinking of Pakistan, another country pulled apart at the seams by internal and external forces. I highly recommend reading Deception: Pakistan, the United States, and the Secret Trade in Nuclear Weapons, an exhaustively researched account of how politics and carefully timed circumstances allowed Pakistan to develop and export nuclear technology under the noses — and often under cover provided by — the United States and the West. As the title would indicate, the book places most of the blame on US administrations and the Pakistani military, both of whose obsession with external interests (Afghanistan and India/Kashmir respectively) unleashed a nuclear monster that raged and continues to rage completely out of control. But more importantly, the book shows how a single-minded preoccupation with a specific strategic tack, historical legacy, or perceived predestined purpose creates a fertile ground for extremism. Actions build upon past actions, and the result is a highly path-dependent stream of events that becomes increasingly difficult to undo as time goes on.

As I walked to my car today, this got me thinking about moderation, and specifically how moderate political forces are constantly stifled by the phenomenon mentioned above, even when the actors involved are perhaps ultimately seeking moderate outcomes themselves. Whether it involves supporting regimes, brokering ceasefires, or creating governments, the actors that hope to achieve moderate, stable outcomes often do so by suppressing or marginalizing other voices in the political discourse, and this exclusion foments extremism in the fringes. We can argue its intentions and agendas, but few would disagree that the US hoped to foster a triumph of democracy over the uncertain arbitrariness of authoritarian rule. The paradox lies in the fact that The US’s pursuit of political moderation allowed for no margin of error, and with this comes no discourse, no compromise. But compromise is precisely the reason that competitive democracies, for example, frequently achieve moderate, political status quos. The institutional constraints of democracy force enemies competing for power to concede losses to realize successes in the final political outcome, but the process begins with the equal inclusion of these voices in the first place.

While in the case of Pakistan, such discourse did not exist; there was only opportunism. Both the US and Pakistan used the same political Islam to their specific advantages, and both discarded this voice when it had outlived its purpose. There is no political outlet for this voice to achieve its goals. Today, both the US and Pakistan may continue to try to achieve a moderate political climate, but what they really are seeking is a way to effectively suppress dissent, and that dissent can only find its voice through subversive violence.

Many argue that political Islam is incongruent with Western-style democracy. Here, I am making no attempt to advocate the creation of one form of government over another. I am merely pointing to a paradox. The Islamic-West divide is the result of a legacy of political involvement in the East by the West, and the case of Pakistan is only one such instance. Moderation implies compromise, stability, an exchange of information, and even peace under the banner of any style of government. I don’t doubt that, for reasons both selfish and otherwise, the US would like to see moderation in the Islamic world. But US policy has not addressed systems; it has addressed symptoms. Its divide-and-conquer, support-and-suppress style of foreign policy cannot draw the moderate cream to the top. It manipulates the cost of admission into the political discussion.

Amongst the concerned blogs, we’ve debated the official assertion that AQ is in its final hour in Algeria. Given the endless stream (and indeed, an apparent increase) of attacks, at first glance, it appears the government is trying to save face and distract attention from its inability to handle the problem. On the other hand, however, perhaps AQ is puffing its chest to hide the fact that it has been pushed to the brink. Personally, I’m not sure it matters whether every last member is dragged from the woods and killed. The political disconnect between the government/military and the population still has yet to be resolved. I think we can expect disaffection within the population to bubble up in one form of another (most likely Islamic and populist in tenor), organized terrorism notwithstanding.

During the massacres of the 1990s, most of the violence was concentrated in the Mitija Plain south of Algiers, frighteningly dubbed the “triangle of death”. Since I know how much the media love their triangles, I took the liberty of estimating a new one for this latest campaign. Tourists to Algeria might want to avoid hiking alone in this area.

A coisa está apertando pra Al Qaeda

Argel deve estar pressionando o último grupo terrorista ativo porque houve outras duas explosões de bombas hoje de manhã em Bouria, a nordeste da capital e ao sul de Tizi-Ouzou, na região de Kabila. Segunda a BBC (e se El Watan consertou a falha do site, aqui está o artigo para quem fala francês), os ataques de hoje atingiram um quartel general militar e um hotel (para militares também?). Alle, do Western Sahara Info, acredita que o número de mortos no ataque de ontem seja aproximadamente 43 e, contando os 11 mortos de hoje (número que deve crescer), esta deve ser a onda de violência que mais fez vítimas desde que a Al Qaeda intensificou seus esforços há pouco mais de um ano.

Entre os blogs sobre o assunto, debatemos a versão oficial segundo a qual a AQ está dandos seus últimos suspiros na Argélia. Tendo em vista uma sucessão infinita e, aparentemente, um aumento no número de ataques, parece que, à primeira vista, o governo está tentando manter sua reputação e desviar a atenção da sua inabilidade em lidar com o problema. Por outro lado, entretanto, talvez a AQ esteja tentando esconder o fato de que já não seja uma estrela de brilho maior. Eu não sei se é realmente importante/relevante que todos os membros sejam tirados do esconderijo na floresta e mortos. A falta de conexão entre o governo/exército e a população ainda é um problema. Acho que se pode esperar que o descontentamento da população venha a crescer e manifestar-se de alguma forma (provavelmente islâmica e populista), sem contar com o terrorismo organizado.

Durante os massacres dos anos 90, a violência estava contida na Planície Mitija a sul de Argel, que ficou apelidada de “triângulo da morte”. For one, it’s very easy to pinpoint the likely location of these individuals. Almost every single attack has occurred in a small slice of real estate stretching from the capital to Tizi-Ouzou in Kabylie, with many of the targets either government or infrastructure in nature. The Kabyle Berbers, a minority ethnic group in a contentious relationship with Arabophonic Algiers, have reportedly allowed AQ to hang around their villages, united under what some view as anti-government solidarity. Whether the government is too afraid to venture into these areas, flush out AQ, and finish the job is a possible topic for discussion. I suspect, however, that the ongoing threat provides an opportunity for the military and government to prolong an endless state of emergency.

That said, there may be some truth to the recruiting problem. The war of the 1990s and the wildly unpopular insurgent campaigns of AQ’s predecessors are evidence that overthrowing the Algerian state via sporadic guerrilla tactics is simply not a tenable goal at this juncture. I doubt roadside bombs in the remote hills are rousing all that much excitement among disaffected, unemployed youth these days. Overthrowing the regime in Algiers is not exactly the jihadist rallying cry of the Iraqi, Afghani, Chechnyan, or Somali theaters.

Still, Algeria loves confusion. With a huge population of jobless young males roaming the streets, there is often a palpable tension in the air, which both sides of the conflict have sought to exploit to their advantage. The government seems to thrive on alternating between declaring victory and blasting back at terrorists in an endless cycle of tug-of-war. For their part, the remaining terrorists – whatever their numbers – get a world audience for their cause. As with the previous civil war, the two seem clasped in an uneasy handshake, and as always, the general population is caught in the middle.

Outro ataque a Boumerdès

Quando todo mundo pensava que os ataques terroristas na Argélia estavam agonizando, acabamos de saber de um novo ataque a um edifício da polícia, cheio de recrutas, perto de Boumerdès, a leste de Argel, nas proximidades de onde ocorreram todos os ataques do ano passado. A última organização terrorista no país, Al Qaeda, assumirá, sem sombra de dúvida, a responsabilidade pelo ataque, o que servirá para aumentar o clima de medo e confusão. Por que o governo argelino tem tanta confiança que a Al Qaeda está para ser derrotada, quando há uma onda de ataques a alvos do governo desde que a violência passou a crescer novamente há alguns anos? Pelas estimativas de Argel, há apenas algumas centenas de terroristas ainda se escondendo nas montanhas na região de Kabila e este pequeno grupo foi desorganizado e derrotado pelo governo e não consegue recrutar novos membros.

É muito fácil apontar a localização exata desses indivíduos. Quase todos os ataques ocorreram numa pequena área que vai da capital a Tizi-Ouzou em Kabila, sendo os alvos o governo ou infraestrutura. Os berberes de Kabila, uma minoria étnica que tem um relacionamento conturbado com Argel afirmaram que a Al Qaeda está na região de seus vilarejos, unidos pelo que alguns vêem como uma solidariedade contra o governo. Discute-se se o governo teme ir a essas regiões, exterminar a Al Qaeda e terminar a missão. Mas minha suspeita é de que a constante ameaça cria a oportunidade para o exército e o governo de prolongar um estado de emergência que não tem fim.

Dito isso, pode ser que o problema de recrutamento possa ser verdade. A guerra dos anos 90 e as campanhas insurgentes dos predecessores da Al Qaeda – extremamente impopulares – são prova de que não é possível depor o governo argelino através de táticas de guerrilha esporádicas. Duvido que bombas em estradas nas montanhas afastadas têm efeito sobre a desempregada juventude ressentida rebelde dos dias atuais. Depor o regime em Argel não é o que vai unir a jihad nos cenários do Iraque, Afeganistão, Chechênia ou Somália.

Mas a Argélia ama confusão. Com uma enrome população de homens jovens desempregados pelas ruas, sente-se a tensão no ar, que ambos os lados do conflito exploram. O governo prospera no braço-de-ferro entre declarações de vitória e ataques a terroristas, que – quantos sejam – ganham atenção para a sua causa. Como na guerra civil anterior, os dois estão unidos e, como sempre, a população não sabe para onde correr.

De volta para a União Soviética

Ah, você viu que a Rússia vai entrar em guerra com a Geórgia? A Rússia vai precisar vender muito petróleo para reconquistar todas as propriedades da era da União Soviética, mas parece que vão começar com os alvos fáceis. Boa sorte, Sr. Putin. Déspotas no mundo todo estão torcendo por você!

I have been interested in (The Political Mind author) Drew Westen’s column in the Huffington Post. Neurologists, psychologists, and political scientists alike can debate the minutiae of his theories (and I have yet to read the book myself), but I think this entry, now a few days old, hit it right on the mark. Specifically, Westen draws attention to the McCain campaign’s recent strategies of attack – tactics which the Obama campaign – in classic Democratic fashion – has failed to effectively address and mitigate. The result of this, of course, is that the McCain campaign is gaining precious ground on Obama.

Given the economy and Bush/Rep unpopularity, this election should be a slam dunk for the Dems, but it is shaping up to be anything but. The cornerstone of Westen’s theory is that, from a psychological perspective, emotional arguments are often much more powerful than those that appeal to logic, and specifically, that the Republicans have been successful in using arguments that trigger strong emotional responses in the electorate, something the Democrats have not been able (or are unwilling) to do themselves. Westen points to the way the Republicans have branded Obama as un-American and untrustworthy, out of touch and an elitist – a celebrity over a politician. It didn’t take long for McCain to take a page out of the Karl Rove playbook (or, you know, hire his operatives) – the very same plays that put “a decider”, who had no taste for complicated issues, in the White House. Like Gore before him, Obama has yet to effectively head these accusations off at the pass, and the polls show the median voter is starting to internalize them. Westen is convinced (and I am inclined to agree), that Obama (a gifted speaker and rouser of spirits) should fight emotion with emotion. The Dems have consistently rested their campaign on the hope that a sound, logical platform will cut through the noise, and that strategy has proven electorally costly. Let’s just say that as someone who would definitely not like to see a four-year extension of the Republican mandate in the White House, I hope Obama heeds his advice.

Emoções

Com tantos golpes de estado na Mauritânia ontem e hoje, é difícil falar sobre política norte-americana (quer dizer, talvez seja pra mim, mas provavelmente não para os comentaristas políticos nos Estados Unidos). O breve flerte da Mauritânia com um governo civil deve estar chegando a um fim que foi bastante antecipado (dê uma olhada na cobertura nesses blogues, que é muito melhor que qualquer uma que encontre em jornais. Esses caras são os verdadeiros nerds), mas a política democrática nos E.U.A. está movimentada com todas as besteiradas típicas de campanhas.

Interessei-me pela coluna política no Huffington Post de Drew Westen, autor de “The Political Mind“. Neurologistas, psicologistas e cientistas políticos podem debater em detalhes as teorias de Westen (e eu mesmo ainda não li o livro), mas acho que esse artigo, publicado há alguns dias, está completamente correto. Especificamente, Westen chama atenção para as recentes estratégias de ataque da campanha de McCain, táticas de que a campanha de Obama — como sói aos Democratas — não consegue tratar e nem mitigar. O resultado é que, obviamente, a campanha de McCain vai ganhando terreno de Obama.

Considerando a economia e a impopularidade de Bush e republicanos, essa eleição deveria ser fácil para os democratas, mas parece que não vai ser bem assim. O fundamento da teoria de Westen é que, de uma perspectiva psicológica, argumentos emocionais surtem mais efeito que os lógicos, e que os republicanos têm usado com sucesso argumentos que surtem fortes respostas emocionais no eleitorado, o que os democratavas não conseguem ou não sabem fazer. Westen fala de como os republicanos conseguem estigmatizar Obama como sendo anti-americano e que suscita pouca confiança, fora de sintonia e elistista — mais uma celebridade que um político. Não demorou muito para o McCain jogar segundo as regras do Karl Rove (ou, sei lá, contratar seus homens) — as mesmas jogadas que colocaram na Casa Branca “uma pessoa de decisões”, que não tem a menor idéia sobre assunto complicados.

Seguindo o exemplo de Gore, Obama ainda tem que enfrentar essas acusações e as pesquisas mostram que o eleitor médio está começando a internalizar o que Westen tem certeza (e com o que eu tenho a concordar): de que Obama, que tem oratória invejável e consegue inflamar, deve combater emoção com emoção. Os democratas costumam basear sua campanha num plataforma coerente e lógica, esperando que faça efeito, mas que não é uma estratégica efetiva nas eleições.

China continues to cut a path across the continent. Whether it’s securing the contract to overhaul Niger’s aging power grid or putting up garish hotels in Khartoum, it seems every day brings news of Chinese investment. For followers of Africa’s plight, one might argue any development is good development (especially when it’s providing a basic public good, such as infrastructure), and indeed, China seems to be doing quite a bit of that. But as we all know, this has come at a price. Not only has China’s willingness to turn a blind eye to the politics of just about everyone earned it top bidding privileges in some of the nastiest – and lucrative – corners of the world, its investment interests have brought a new dimension to China’s veto on the world stage.

China itself has always been a thorn in the side of the human-rights movement, but China’s purchasing of access to markets has expanded and aggravated this problem beyond its borders. It’s no secret that economic (and the attendant diplomatic) ties with China have been absolutely essential for many authoritarian and cronyist governments, and such a relationship has served to strengthen otherwise weak leaders, who pursue oppressive tactics and suppress political dissent (perhaps most prominently today in Sudan, with the Darfur crisis). You might even say that a lack of civil society on either side of the equation makes all of this possible: the client states are devoid of any civilian-government connection – their populations are stifled, marginalized, and disaffected; in China, internal tension is delicately mitigated by a constant economic liberalization with no political liberalization – civil society is not permitted to flourish. In short, no one is accountable to their citizens, so no hands need be restrained.

We all know this is a problem, and we all know that our own (Western) economic dependence on China’s cheap markets keeps our leaders from speaking up too loudly. As I heard some author or pundit remark recently, China views us as toothless tigers, helpless to do anything. Indeed, China’s sin is evident, but it’s hardly anything new. For all of our complaints, the Chinese expansion into the global South is barely different from the neo-liberalist campaign, which let in big companies, drained resources, and lined the pockets of despots everywhere, while the citizens of these “liberated” countries were often kept completely out of the loop.

One need only to start throwing around words like “IMF” and “World Bank” in sub-Saharan Africa to get a sense of what austerity and conditionality did for economic and political development there. In essence, China is little more than another actor getting a slice of the pie, only this one could care less about keeping its intentions under its hat. I think it’s time we start looking at China’s sin as indicative of a greater problem we were largely responsible for setting in motion. After all, you don’t need to consult Shell or DeBeers to see that none of this was ever about democracy. Democracy is useful tool for proliferating and stabilizing markets, but not a necessary one, especially when the “market” consists of a single man willing to sell off his country’s resources to the highest bidder. My purpose is not to sermonize, but rather to gain a perspective. Markets *are* mostly good, and many of these countries desperately need access to them. But economic development is no good when it outpaces or occurs in the absence of political development. I understand that this fact is not lost on laypeople, scholars, and governments alike, but I think that it is one long overdue for reconsideration, especially with the next “Chinas” soon to be lining up to get their turn.

A Nova Economia do Desenvolvimento

Assim como o consenso neo-liberal pós Segunda Guerra Mundial informou o modo pelo qual o mundo desenvolvido se relaciona com os países em desenvolvimento (i.e., “desenvolvimento” através da abertura de mercado pela democratização e muitas vezes por esforços de instituições internacionais e companhias que “devem” a seus criadores ocidentais), os titãs asiáticos estão rapidamente mudando como fazer negócios entre os países com menor PIB. E quando falo em “titãs”, estou falando especificamente da China e quando digo “países com menor PIB”, refiro-me à África.

A China continua a avançar sobre o continente, seja através do contrato para reformar completamente o sistema de eletricidade ou para construir hotéis espetaculosos em Khartoum, parece que todo dia há um novo investimento chinês. Para os que companham a difícil situação da África, pode-se argumentar que qualquer desenvolvimento é bom, especialmente no caso de um bem público básico, como infraestrutura) e, de fato, parece que a China o tem feito. Não só a China finge que não vê os delitos cometidos por quase todo mundo e com isso ganhou privilégios em licitações em alguns dos mais repugnantes — e lucrativos – recantos do mundo, mas também deu nova dimensão ao poder de veto da China no cenário internacional.

A China sempre foi a pedra no sapato do movimento de direitos humanos, mas a obtenção de acesso a mercados expandiu e agravou o problema para além das fronteiras chinesas. É notório que relações econômicas com a China (e as diplomáticas que daí derivam) têm sido essenciais para muitos governos autoritários e praticantes de favoritismo e que tais relações serviram para fortalecer líderes que de outra forma seriam fracos, e que se utilizam de táticas opressivas que suprimem a oposição política (talvez mais evidentemente no Sudão, com a crise de Darfur). Pode-se até dizer que a ausência de sociedade civil em ambos os lados torne essa situação possível: nos estados “clientes”, a sociedade civil não se comunica com o governo – suas populações são sufocadas, marginalizadas e alienadas; na China, a tensão internada é delicadamente mitigada por uma constante liberalização econômica que não se reflete na esfera política – a sociedade civil não pode prosperar. Em resumo, ninguém é responsabilizado perante seus cidadãos e não há como deter esse tipo de comportamento.

Todos temos conhecimento desse problema, mas também sabemos que nossa economia (do Ocidente) é dependente dos mercados baratos da China, o que faz com que não tratemos do assunto de frente. Ouvi um especialista ou escritor recentemente que considera que a China nos vê como tigres banguelas, incapazes de fazer qualquer coisa. O que a China faz de errado é evidente, mas não é nenhuma novidade. A expansão chinesa no mercado dos países em desenvolvimento quase não difere do neo-liberalismo que se vê por aí, que resulta em grandes empresas, recursos escassos e em bolsos cheios para os déspotas, enquanto os cidadãos desses países “liberados” são deixados totalmente por fora.

Mencione “FMI” e “Banco Mundial” para a população da África Subsaariana e você entenderá os efeitos causados pela austeridade e pelas condições impostas para receber auxílio financeiro em seu desenvolvimento econômico e político. A China nada mais é que mais um ator que deseja vantagens, com a diferença de que ela não faz questão de esconder suas intenções. Acho que está na hora de começar a ver o comportamento da China como parte de um problema maior pelo qual somos responsáveis. Afinal de contas, não é preciso consultar a Shell or DeBeers para perceber que não é a democratização que moveu este movimento. A democracia é uma ferramenta útil para que mercados se proliferem e estabilizem, mas não é uma ferramenta estritamente necessária, especialmente quando o “mercado” consiste de um único homem que está disposto a vender os recursos de seu país a quem oferecer mais dinheiro. Não quero passar sermão, mas ganhar perspectiva. Mercados *são* na maior parte bons, e muitos desses países necessitam desesperadamente de acesso a eles. Mas desenvolvimento econômico não é bom quando não é acompanhado por desenvolvimento político. Creio que leigos, acadêmicos e governos entendem tudo isso, mas acho que já passou da hora de repensarmos esse cenário, especialmente quando novas Chinas aparecerem.

The purpose of this entry is not to harangue the world (including any potential readers) for inattention, or pat myself on the back for caring. I bring it up because the Algerian problem affects us all, and as it continues to unfold (and, hopefully, resolve some day), I will probably devote future entries to highlighting developments. So why should anyone care anyway?

At its heart, the problem with Algeria is a problem common to a lot of the world’s countries: a military regime has a stranglehold on power and groups of dissidents have waged a (in this case, holy) war designed to undermine and, ultimately, collapse this regime. The general population, naturally, is caught in the crossfire. To get into more detail here would require trying to explain a frightening and shadowy dance played by these actors, which has mostly served to solidify a tense status quo – one with which few Algerians are very happy.

But there are lessons here from which we can all learn, and Algeria has a lot to tell us about religion, colonialism, nationalism, terrorism, identity, the power and resilience of ideas, and the often dangerous role played by the governments of all of “our” (read: the West) nations. To peer inside Algeria’s post-independence history is to really understand how a new nation can channel its shared hopes and dreams into creating a country out of a colony, and how quickly that dream can be hijacked by the unconstrained hand of those in power, turning everyone against each other.

The Algerian government (and often the press) will eagerly tell you that all of the violence is the fault of Islamic terrorists, and frequently, they’re right. What they won’t tell you is that the threat of terrorism is a double-edged sword in Algeria: violence threatens the population and the government, but it is also a powerful tool and scapegoat – one which the Algerian government has proved adept at using to their advantage in a post-9/11 world.

The BBC recently ran this, which details news of UN’s security chief resigning, many months after a horrible terrorist attack in Algiers killed several UN employees. The chief, David Veness, resigned after a UN panel determined his officers did not provide “adequate protection” to UN staffers leading up to and following the attack. When I read this, I my first thought was of the Algerian government, which has both continually failed to protect its citizens from the violence, and has used such violence to justify its actions and garner valuable alliances from the West. While the UN may have indeed been remiss in its protection, it seems to me like another instance in which no one in the Algerian government is taken to task, and Algerians are left to pick up the pieces.

Do povo e para o povo

Na minha época de estudante de ciências políticas e, hoje em dia, por causa do meu interesse pessoal, passei muito tempo tentando entender o conflito político na Argélia, que levou a uma guerra civil nos anos 90 e continua a ser causa de instabilidade e destruição até hoje. Não culpo quem não tenha familiaridade com o assunto ou não esteja interessado nessa crise; a história da Argélia é confusa e triste, mais ainda porque esses eventos acontecem estão relegados à margem do que as pessoas geralmente vêem. Parece que quase todo mundo tem alguma coisa melhor pra fazer.

Esse post não quer servir de bronca por causa da desanteção do mundo (ou dos leitores) ou para parabenizar-me pelo meu interesse no assunto. Menciono essa questão porque os problemas argelinos nos afetam a todos e, com o seu desenrolar (ou, espero, solução), vou provavelmente escrever mais para chamar atenção a novos acontecimentos. Então, por que a gente deve se interessar?

Fundamentalmente, o problema com a Argélia é comum a muitos países: um regime militar tem controle total do poder e grupos dissidentes iniciaram uma guerra (nesse caso, santa) para enfraquecer e acabar com esse regime. A população, claro, fica no meio do fogo cruzado. Para tentar explicar essa situação mais detalhadamente, pode-se falar de uma dança de sombras amedrontadora em que os dançarinos são o regime militar e os grupos dissidentes. Essa dança só tem servido para solidificar um status quo que contenta poucos argelinos e é marcado por muita tensão.

Mas há aqui lições que todos podemos aprender e a Argélia nos ensina muito sobre religião, colonialismo, nacionalismo, terrorismo, identidade, o poder e a resitência de idéias, e o papel muitas vezes perigoso dos governos de todas as “nossas” nações (leia-se ocidentais). Dar uma olhada na história pós-independência da Argélia é realmente entender como uma nação pode concentrar suas esperanças em criar um país a partir de uma colônia e como esse sonho pode rapidamente ser tomado à força pelo poder que torna a todos inimigos.

O governo argelino, e muitas vezes a imprensa, vão-lhe dizer que toda a violência é culpa dos terroristas islâmicos o que, na maior parte das vezes, é verdade. O que eles não lhe vão contar é que a ameaça de terrorismo é uma faca de dois gumes na Argélia: a violência ameaça a população e o governo, mas também é uma ferramenta poderosa e uma bode expiatório que o governo argelino tem-se mostrado adepto a usar a favor de si no mundo pós 11 de setembro.

A BBC publicou recentemente um artigo com detalhes sobre a renúncia do chefe de segurança da ONU, meses após o ataque terrorista em Argel que matou vários funcionários da ONU. O chefe de segurança, David Veness, renunciou depois de um painel da ONU ter determinado que os oficiais não haviam dado “proteção adequada” ao staff, antes e depois do ataque. Quando li esse artigo, pensei imediatamente no governo argelino que continuamente falha em proteger seus cidadãos da violência e que tem usado dessa violência para justificar suas ações e fazer alianças valiosas com o Ocidente. Concordo que a ONU possa ter sido negligente quanto à segurança e à proteção, mas me parece ser um outro exemplo em que ninguém do governo argelino tenha sido responsabilizado e aos argelinos resta tentar voltar à vida normal depois de mais uma tragédia.

That would make me sad to my very soul, but you know what makes me really sad too? Obama jumping under a desk every time someone with a beard walks by. And do you know why? Because every time he refuses to visit a mosque, or every time he turns away someone at his rallies, he is saying he agrees with those idiots. He is giving them strength and lending credence to their claims and I don’t like it. I want a president I can respect, not simply one who can win a slim majority, because, frankly, either of them could pull that off.

Obama talks a big game about inclusion, but he often acts like every other presidential candidate I have seen: shifty and spineless. We all know McCain could publicly damn Muslims to the fiery pit of hell without eroding his electoral base; I want to see Obama say what he really believes, and isolate these morons to the fringes of the political spectrum where they belong. The more we have this conversation, and the more we hold our politicians to the fire, the harder it is going to be for people with these stupid views to defend themselves in the court of national public opinion. As it stands now, they seem to be winning, and everyone’s too scared about hurting Obama to speak up.

Esses malditos lenços!

Vou votar no Obama em novembro não importa o que aconteça, mas vamos tomar cuidado pra não tratá-lo como o Cristo reincarnado. Se essa eleição for perdida por causa de um pequeno bando de idiotas que falam alto e que odeiam “todo mundo” que insistem que o Obama é muçulmano e que todos os muçulmanos são maus, então que seja. O resto do mundo vai receber a mensagem de que esta é uma terra em que volume e força mandam e a lógica, a razão e a empatia não têm vez.

Isso me deixaria tristíssimo, mas sabe o que me deixa triste também? O Obama se escondendo toda vez que alguém de barba passa. E sabe por quê? Porque toda vez que ele se recusa a ir a uma mesquita ou cada vez que ele vira as costas a alguém numa demonstração, ele está dizendo que concorda com esses idiotas. Ele lhes está dando forças e aceitando como válidas essas declarações e isso não me agrada. Eu quero um presidente que eu possa respeitar e não só um que possa ganhar por uma pequena diferença, porque, honestamente, tanto um como outro conseguiria ganhar por essa pequena diferença.

O Obama fala muito sobre inclusão, mas age muitas vezes como qualquer outro candidato à presidência que eu já vi: tem opiniões que mudam o tempo todo e não tem coragem. Todos sabemos que o McCain poderia mandar os muçulamos queimarem no fogo dos infernos sem alterar sua base eleitoral. Eu quero que o Obama diga em que ele realmente acredita e isole esses bestas, mandando-os para as margens do espetro político, que é o lugar deles. Quanto mais falarmos sobre isso e quanto mais cobrarmos de nossos políticos, mais difícil será para as pessoas com essas opiniões estúpidas se defenderem no tribunal da opinião pública nacional. Dada a situação atual, parece que eles estão ganhando e todo mundo morre de medo de prejudicar o Obama para se fazer ouvir.
